Matthieu Godmé-Guillaume
Matthieu Godmé-Guillaume
Matthieu is yet another young gun in Champagne taking over vines established long ago and turning out modern, exciting wines. The vineyards, first established in 1897 in Villers-Marmery, now cover just over 5 hectares in the three villages of Verzenay (Grand Cru), Verzy (Grand Cru), and Villers-Marmery (1er Cru). They have a tiny plot in Beaumont sur Vesle as well. The vines are 30 to 40 years old and about 2/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir. Farming is non-certified organic with various grasses for cover crop and very shallow tilling. Fermentations are with native yeast in used barrels or stainless steel. Reserve wines come from perpetual reserves that are kept separate for each village. No fining or filtering and low SO2 use.
These are exciting wines from a meticulous young winemaker blessed with great vineyard material. They are also just plain delicious.
